Since 1954, JCI has enjoyed a Special Consultative Status with UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Working in collaboration with the UN, JCI has held several JCI Summits at UN in New York. These Summits have helped JCI members learn about the UN and its projects, including those related with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). JCI members worldwide are contributing to achieve those MDGs. The UN is led by the UN Secretary-General , who is appointed by the General Assembly.

JCI is also affiliated with the NGO Section of the UN Department of Public Information (DPI). It serves as the liaison between the Department and NGOs associated with DPI. JCI helps disseminate information about the UN, thereby building knowledge of and support for the Organization at the grassroots level.

As an accredited NGO with special consultative status, JCI and its members are allowed to attend relevant international conferences convened by the UN and the meetings of the preparatory bodies of the said conferences as well as Committees. In addition, JCI has privileges such as:

a) Able to consult with officers from the UN Secretariat on matters of interest to the NGO;

b) Allowed to make oral statements based on recommendations by the Committee (or Commission);

c) Allowed to submit brief written statements; and

d) May designate representatives to sit at meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiaries

JCI Local/National Organizations are entitled to participate in the conferences and Committees under the coordination of the JCI WHQ.
