President of JCI Dublin is just back from Brussels where he attended the JCI know how transfer program. The Know how transfer program was an opportunity for 90 young people from around Europe to go to the European parliament in Brussels and see how the European Parliament and Commission work. This was a three day event with the first day being lectures on how the European commission works. President of JCI Dublin Mark Kelly said “I found the lectures on the internal market very informative as this is something that has aided Ireland in our current golden period”. “The lecture on how the commission is currently developing policies to assist the development of entrepreneurship as well as streamlining the company formation process Europe wide”. “This process currently takes four weeks in Ireland and the commission would like to see this happening in at most one week”. “Being a company owner I went through the argues process of company setup and I fully support a streamlined system that would at the minimum show a commitment from Europe to SME’s of which there are 25 million across Europe” The second and third day were based in the European Parliament and each of the 90 delegates were assigned to an MEP from there county to shadow. The week we were in the parliament was committee week. This is when all the MEP’s attend the committees they are members of and work on / vote on amendments to the policy documents that that committee is working on. President Mark Kelly said “I attended a committee meeting on the internal marked where they discussed gun control in Europe and how it is lagging behind the rest of the world”. “There was also a discussion on harmonising mobile roaming charges across Europe that was enlightening where I was surprised to hear that setting caps on roaming charges could be the worst thing that the parliament could do”. Mark said “The opportunity to go to the European parliament is not something I would have got to do if I was not a member of JCI Dublin this was a great training opportunity”. “I was amassed at how young and vibrant the parliament was and this unique opportunity has really put a new face on the European parliament for me” |
