| Junior Chamber International Dublin Fights Malaria with Bed Nets |
|
JCI Dublin are proud to announce that they are undertaking a series of fundraising activities to send 1000 bed nets to Africa by the end of 2008. The initiative was sparked by current world President and fellow Dubliner, Graham Hanlon's committment to the United Nations Foundation to help with their campaign against Malaria. JCI World will contribute to the "Nothing but Nets" campaign by sending 1 million malaria-fighting bed nets to children in Africa by 2015. Kristy Clarke 25 August 2008, JCI Dublin
"Nothing but Nets" is a programme to purchase preventative bed nets and distribute them to young children in endemic areas. Malaria is the number one killer of children in Africa. Bed nets are proven to decrease the chance of Malaria infection by approximately 90%. They are truly a live saving tool. One bed net costs just $10. "Together we will cover a continent with bed nets! We will save lives!," says Kristy Clarke, Nothing But Nets, campaign director, JCI Dublin. "We are looking forward to the challenge of the marathon and we hope to have an international team running to raise awareness about malaria in sub-saharan Africa. We really want to get those bed nets to Africa and to start saving the lives of children," she concluded. Part of JCI Dublin's charity fundraising programme includes running the Dublin Marathon. A running team was formed for the Dublin marathon to be run on 27 October 2008. The team is seeking both individual and corporate sponsorship. All funds raised will be used to purchase bed nets. Any other interested runners are welcome to join the team just sign up at www.jcidublin.com Another element of the fundraising has included the development of a logo and t-shirts were printed to help raise awareness. Tshirts can be purchased for $12 by contacting the team at JCI Dublin. In a few short months, money to purchase 250 bed nets has been raised by the JCI chapter. A series of social events has allowed Dubliners to have fun for a good cause and get the message out about malaria. These included a comedy night, an African-themed trivia night, a bazaar and a BBQ. Several chapter members have held fundraising activities at their workplaces. One member made a basket of wine and sweets which he raffled off to his co-workers. Another member put a change collection jar in the company kitchen. There is more to come too!. There are plans for more social events and raffles in October and November.
